Description

Baked Apple Donuts are a delightful fall treat, featuring a moist and fluffy donut base filled with spiced apple pie filling and coated in cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For Apple Pie Filling:
    • 1 1/4 cup diced gala apples (about 2–3 medium apples)
    • 1 ½ tbsp salted butter
    • 3 tbsp brown sugar
    • 1 tsp apple pie spice
    • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • For Donuts:
    • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
    • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
    • ½ tsp baking soda
    • ¾ cup brown sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • ¾ cup low fat buttermilk
    • 3 tbsp salted butter (melted)
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • For Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
    • ¼ cup white granulated sugar
    • 1 tbsp cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp salted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and dice apples.
  2. Heat up a sauce pot over medium heat. Add butter and sugar, mix well. Add diced apples and mix.
  3. Sprinkle in flour and apple pie spice. Mix well, cover and lower the heat to medium-low. Cook until apples are softened, stirring every few minutes. Take off heat and let it cool.
  4. Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease a donut pan.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla together until smooth.
  6. Sift in all dry ingredients and whisk until incorporated.
  7. Add apple pie filling mixture and mix well using a spatula.
  8. Transfer the batter into a piping bag.
  9. Cut the tip off the piping bag, leaving a 3/4 inch opening. Squeeze batter into the donut cups of the pan, filling each cup almost all the way full.
  10. Bake for 11-12 minutes and let donuts cool on a wire rack until they can be handled.
  11. For the cinnamon sugar topping, melt butter in a cup and mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  12. Brush the tops of the donuts with melted butter and dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly covered. Repeat with all donuts.

Notes

  • Make sure to stir the apple filling frequently to prevent sticking.
  • For easier filling of the piping bag, place it in a pint glass.
  • Allow donuts to cool completely after baking for best results.
